“We have noticed a white chalky substance on our walls. What is this and is it serious?” |

The white substance is called “Efflorescence.” It is the process of the calcium in the limestone portion of your concrete being leached out of your wall.
This indicates that ground water is reservoiring inside the wall. This is a condition you need to pay attention to. |

“Our basement walls and floor have cracks in them. What causes this?” |
| A: |
Different cracks mean different things. Some of the cracks can be simple settlement cracks which are common and generally not a problem.
Others can be caused from pressure behind the walls or under the floor. This is an issue you would need to address. |

“After it rains our basement smells very musty? Where is the smell coming from?” |
| A: |
Musty odors are the result of decaying mold and mildew. Mold and mildew can only be present if your basement has standing water. This water
may or may not be visible. Removing the water will take care of this problem. |
